OUR STORY
Glenn & Tim’s story starts eleven years ago...
Picture it: New York City, November 2011
Glenn had just run the NYC marathon. Feeling good about himself and at his fighting weight, when asked if he were up for meeting someone new, he agreed to meet Tim on a blind date. Let’s face it, Glenn had been single at this point for a few years and needed to date someone closer to his own age anyway.
Tim was the classic Chelsea bachelor. You know the type: having children with a lesbian couple from Brooklyn, “dating” on weekends as the sperm bank allowed, getting laid off from his hateful job, and deciding to launch his very own interior design business in the midst of a major recession. (See: underpaid creative)
So much to say that Tim really had nothing going on and had nothing to lose meeting said “finance guy” for dinner and a drink.
Potentially fun casual night out for dinner takes a turn when Tim, hand on the glass door poised to walk in, spots Glenn at the bar laughing it up with the bartender. Heart explodes, Fireworks go off, and Tim’s only job is to not mess it up this time.
(Fun fact: the week prior to this blind date, Tim went on a blind date where the guy walked out while Tim was in the bathroom. Tim had just told the guy that he had a son and was pregnant with the second. Good times.)
When Tim walks in the bar and they meet, Glenn is awe-struck by how damn hunky Tim is. Fortunately, the bar was dimly lit so Glenn’s blushing red cheeks were not too noticeable.
After a quick, awkward drink at the bar, dinner followed. Tim didn’t say all that much at dinner (understandably) but he did have a lovely dialogue of his own in his head about how not to mess this one up. “Keep it quiet, Tim. Nod and smile. Nod and smile.” But instead out comes, “So I have a kid with a lesbian couple in Brooklyn and we’re pregnant with our second. I’m gonna go to the restroom and if you’re here when I get back, we should order.”
Glenn didn’t budge. They ordered and ate dinner. Glenn asked a lot of questions and Tim gave a lot of one-word answers.
Glenn gave Tim a peck on the cheek at the end of the date on the corner and Tim walked home without glancing back. It seemed as though the evening did not go well, yet as Glenn was thinking Tim didn’t like him at all, Tim was wondering how it went so badly when for him, it was love at first sight.
Email is exchanged, and after travel obligations for both of them, they plan a second date about a month later. And a month after that, holidays behind them, they plan a third. It was then that they both realized this could be something really wonderful and, the deal was sealed…as they say.
